Don’t worry, there are no spoilers here. Only commentary!

I recently saw Ryan Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, and, like many viewers and critics, I absolutely loved it. As someone with a general interest in storytelling, especially in the form of film, I was delighted to see such a great delivery of an original script (I was also very happy with the score and soundtrack, too). I’ll also have you know that this film is Scaredy Cat approved, meaning that though it’s categorized as a horror film, I didn’t find it too scary. The jump scares did get me, but they’re jump scares, that doesn’t really count.

But when you release a film called “Sinners”, you are bound to face some backlash from the religious community, especially when religion is a huge focal point of the film. Specifically, Sinners explores topics of racism while tying in concepts like Christianity, hoodoo, and the supernatural.

I’ve been seeing reviews and opinions ranging from “I’m a Christian. I went to see it and I loved it” (I would fit into this category) and “I’m a Christian, I’m not feeding my spirit with something like this!” And then some people in the middle did go see the film and viewed it as anti-Christian…
