I get your disagreement. The point isn’t to take away from the movie being well made, rather why other well-made films (if not better) fall short of winning awards and it typically comes down to how digestible the content.
If you look up interviews and statements from the family of the real Dr Shirley of whom this movie is based upon, there were actually plenty of exaggerations or false ideas of how things actually went down, as well as his character as a whole. The fact that so much research was done for the character of Tony Lip and not much for Dr Shirley is already telling in itself. According to his family, Dr Shirley didn’t even consider him a friend.
So while the movie is very well made and both lead actors preformed very well, it doesn’t change the fact that the “based on true story” claim of it highly questionable.
