I find this part, in particular, to be very scary.
It’s that type of backward mentality that would keep our society stagnant — or taking steps back. Not identifying a problem is the equivalent of not getting a sore checked out. Somehow people think keeping quiet and “ignoring” a problem is going to solve it. What they’re actually doing is creating a wound that festers and spreads until the problem becomes devastatingly huge. Movements like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter serve to repair that damage and to treat that wound. People have been doing these things because they know our society doesn’t hold high importance on it. The more we can normalize speaking out about it, the more people will realize that what happened to that reporter is not normal nor should it ever be accepted as such.
