I got my first relaxer before I started kindergarten, so I literally had no idea what my hair was actually like until my Freshman year of college when I decided to chop my hair off and go natural. I definitely remember the stigma of ‘not having your hair done’ as a child; when bullies wanted to attack you it was one of the first things they brought up.
Even though natural is becoming more accepted, it still doesn’t make up for the fact that it needs to be represented a lot better. When a little white girl messes up her hair at school, her teacher promptly fixes it. When a little whie girl messes up her hairdo at school it’s pretty much just going to stay messed up the whole day. I’m also getting a little tired of explaining to people that it’s not “gross” that I don’t wash my hair every day. Thanks so much for sharing!
