I really appreciate your posting about this.

It’s something that my friends and I have been going back and forth about as well (people of color, mostly Black or Latino). Since the incident it was like my timelines were split in half: one side creating memes and jokes about the situation, the other side taking it 100% seriously. Then both are criticizing each other for it.

Personally, I find it hard to “enjoy” (not sure if this is the right word) the memes and jokes. I know I have seen at least a couple that got a short chuckle out of me, but the short moment of humor doesn’t stand against the overall discomfort that there are memes about it in the first place. That’s likely because of so many of my friends and family being in the military and how this situation affects them so differently than civilians. But also because of the points you brought up: our generation is at a point of privilege in the sense that we can’t fathom the idea of living through an actual World War. Not only that, but I think Americans have always had a way of trying to make humor out of everything in a desperate way to cope with the reality in which we live (especially over the past four years).

Great read!
