I think what some people fail to realize is that being a Comedian — especially a Stand-Up Comedian is an occupation, it’s a job. It’s not something that just anybody can do (successfully). You don’t just go up there and wing it, developing a set, getting timing and delivery right — these are all things you still need to practice. Unfortunately, you just never get a 100% guarantee that a joke will hit like you think it should.
One problem that I think that the woman you saw had, is the fact that she didn’t know her audience. There are a lot of occupations that require time, planning, and research and Stand-up comedy is definitely one of them. If you don’t know your audience, your set is less likely to get laughs.
I think that goes for anyone who is just upset about living in a more politically correct era. If you want to have all those problematic jokes, then find an audience that likes that stuff or doesn’t care about it (sounds messed up, but they’re still out there).
Just like Rappers, Comedians will have a short shelf-life if they don’t adapt to the changing times. You have to have something the separates you from the pack, so the same old thing isn’t going to impress anybody (unless you can somehow put a unique spin to it).
