I was simply heartbroken when I started college and started learning just how little was being taught about historical Black figures during my grade school years. Even the same few figures that they do recycle in the curriculum tend to be watered down to be more 'digestible' (i.e. MLK).
I remember reading 'Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria', and one thing that stands out to me still is a frustrated White student saying "It's not my fault Blacks don't write books!". Not including proper Black history, Black literature, etc. in the curriculum does more damage than people really believe. It’s highly unlikely that a teacher or parent literally told the student that ‘Blacks don’t write books’. But people will remain ignorant to things that they are not exposed to.
