I’m excited to see Queen & Slim and to formulate my own opinion of how I feel about the film. Looking at her review, I have to agree that there was nothing “scathing” about it. The problems you addressed are something I’ve become more concerned about as more race-centered films are coming to light. Slave movies and films that depict Black are on the rise lately, and I feel that it’s harder for us to look at them objectively. We’re likely to feel the same ‘wrath’ for not thinking that it’s the best film of all time.
People mistakenly correlate disliking the film with being against whatever cause or point it seeks to drive through. As you said, we are not a monolith and will always have our own opinions on what makes a great film. Thanks for sharing this!
