I’m reminded of another incident I referenced in my story in which an officer completely man handled pinned down an 11-year old Black girl. His excuse? “She was bigger, and really strong”. According to that video I didn’t see a “big bad Black girl” resisting arrest, I saw a child panicking and begging for help.
I do not understand these schools who call police on Black children. Not send them to the principle’s office, not call their parents, not even stick them out in the hallway for a few minutes — they call the police. It’s far too common that Black children (girls especially) are viewed less sympathetically; it’s like they think we’re born “grown”. There is a complete lack of sympathy because of the caricatures painted of us that people feed into (‘angry Black girl’, ‘strong Black girl’ and ‘Jezebel’). There is no doubt that this story would be inciting more outrage if the people involved weren't Black women and children.
Thank you so much for sharing this
