Such an insightful read! This line: “students of color are not tasked with mitigating the underlying biases of their teachers” resonated the most for me. My middle and high school growing up were basically 50/50 when it came to Black and White students, but I was automatically in homogenously white environments because I took advanced courses. Black students are expected to have impeccable grades in order to be taken seriously and given their due credit, while simultaneously dealing with the stress of being a ‘good representative’ of Blackness. While I’ve noticed improvement since I’ve been in school, we definitely still have a ways to go in order to get these schools culturally competent. Thanks for sharing!
