And I really do that quote from one of my favorite reads (7 Habits of Highly Effective People). “Seek first to understand, then to be understood”.
It holds a lot of truth. I think this very concept is one of the things that was a huge stumbling block for a few of my White friends who have expressed the desire to be an ally. Most of the learning takes place in unlearning old habits. It’s very easy to make something about yourself in those situations, to get up in arms and be quick to site yourself as “one of the good guys”. That in itself can be very patronizing and make us a question: Well are you really here for the cause or are you here to gain recognition for appearing to be for the cause?
There’s nothing glamorous about activism, and yet I still find so many people who call it quits when things get “too real”. As you said, it will take more than just shouting out phrases or carrying around safety pins.
