I can definitely see both sides here. Personally, I think it's important for people to be on the same page so I would say he's definitely doing people a favor by putting that out there so early. I would imagine there's no point in developing any attachment to someone only to realize that you two want two different things (or at the very least have very different timelines).
But I will say I've encountered people who seem to be more concerned about the deadline than the actual person they're doing life with. I've only experienced this on the side of the woman (in the context of a heterosexual relationship). For one friend, there was this HUGE push for a very specific date to be married, even though she wasn't in a relationship yet. And, unfortunately, when I asked her about why it had to absolutely be that date she didn't have much of an answer outside of "it's what I planned for".
