Thanks for sharing this, and for not just working in education but for expressing a true desire to educate and speak truth into the next generation.

I’ve noticed a lot that people have been using the term ‘racist’ or ‘racism’ quite loosely. It’s as if anything and everything that is brought up for the topic of race that happens to make the other person uncomfortable is deemed ‘racist’. And when you’re working with eighth-graders, I imagine that what you taught, the student interrupted, and what the student told their mother got lost in translation. I’m glad to hear that you approached them about it.

The truth is hardly ever pretty but it needs to be heard. People would rather stay comfortable and avoid any type of crucial conversation on a matter (no matter how painfully true it is). They say the comfort zone appears to be a beautiful place, but not a thing ever grows from it.
