It's so crazy how our perceptions of something can change when we revisit it the second time around.
I do identify with those conflicting feelings. On one side, I do believe that the show offered a layer of realness that we weren't always getting with shows at the time. And the show did still have its high points and held relatability.
However, as you said, the events that happened between the women in this show would much more likely end in tattered friendships and not thriving ones. We've had friends like them, and a lot of times they do end up getting cut off (as they rightfully should). It could be that we were so excited about the representation (basically filled the gap that Living Single left open) that a lot of us weren't paying attention to the toxicity of the friendships.
I think I accept Girlfriends for what it is, but it's just not the model of Black femme friendship we want it to be. Great read!
