Thanks so much for sharing this Juliana!

Toni Morrison was (still is, honestly) my favorite author and a big inspiration for me to continue writing. Unfortunately, I’ve never watched Beloved but after I got into Morrison’s work in high school I did a lot of reading and research on the polarizing views of the film. From what I read about the film, it seems like it was very hard for a lot of people to digest, both for its hard-to-swallow content and its overall graphic nature.

From what it seems, maybe along with the discourse with the actual genre of the film, the film was simply just given to us too early. It definitely would have fit into this mold of the Black Horror that Jordan Peele presents with ‘Get Out’ and ‘Us’, but nothing changes the fact that it’s still much heavier. With the current political climate and the steady increase of racial awareness, and the passing of Toni Morrison, I do wonder if Black filmmakers have entertained the idea of creating a remake of Beloved. Something tells me people would be more open to it today than they were in 1999, whether or not it is presented as a horror film.
