Woo Chile, I can’t even say “bless their heart” for this one.

I think you handled yourself very well, and it’s good to know there were people in the group who were in your corner. It’s this aspect of #whitefeminism that I find particularly exhausting. It seems like there’s more energy put into rationalizing problematic actions than there is educating themselves on why those problematic actions occur in the first place. There is more emphasis on trying to equate/compare hardship when, in actuality, our hardships are going to be inherently different. I’ve also encountered something like this where the person was trying so hard to “relate” to me — when they obviously couldn’t — instead of actually listening and attempting to be an ally in the situation. I just don’t get it.
